FOCUS ON SURFACE DESIGN - YARDAGE

Join surface designer and textile printer Natalie Gerber in her studio every Wednesday over 4 weeks to expand your knowledge of screen printed textiles.  In this intimate class you’ll team up with a studio mate to develop and produce your own micro collections with a focus on fall winter 17/18.  With hands on demonstrations and problem solving through out the course, you will print three meters of organic cotton/linen and gain a deeper understanding behind the process of screen printing. Work through the steps from repeat pattern development to screen prep, colour mixing, registration and finally printing. At the end of this four week course you will have a better understanding of the process, materials and history of textile printing and your own micro textile collection for future projects.

From November 6th – 12th 2017 participants are invited to showcase their fall/winter collections in a group show at CSpace King Edward.  Opening reception to be announced.

4 Oct – Team Printing

WEEK 1
In this class we will discuss the history of screen and textile printing touching on various techniques from past to present.  You will begin developing two to three repeat patterns for print that consider an end use and work together as a micro collection. We will also begin preparations for printing and you’ll degrease and coat screens.

WEEK 2
Our focus in this class will be on colour mixing and screen preparation.  We will discuss various pigment systems and the additives that can be used which affect the hand of the finished print, viscosity of the inks and fixatives for longer lasting colour. You will shoot your screens in studio and gain a knowledge of working with an exposure unit while colour testing.

WEEK 3
Over the next two classes participants will work together as a team and print samples while fine tuning their printing technique.  You will learn about registration for repeat pattern printing and print three meters of fabric in multiple colourways for your final micro collection.

WEEK 4
In this final class participants will work together as a team and complete printing for their micro collections. We will also strip, degrease screens and end with a friendly critique reviewing the process and what we’ve learnt.
