Black Sheep Mattress began with a belief that there was a more sustainable and beneficial way to make and sell mattresses. Developed from a growing awareness of the negative health and environmental impacts of conventional mattress manufacturing, the company has delivered an artisanal approach to the industry for over 10 years. Over time, they have grown in their knowledge of quality, sustainability and craftsmanship, continuously expanding their products and services to better meet a person’s sleep needs.
The company started in 2011 when Christian Schmidt began working with his father Joe to bring Canadians all natural, handmade mattresses, pillows and box springs. Their goal was to create a completely green and ethically run mattress company that was focused on delivering a high end locally produced product.

Join Black Sheep Mattress and textile artist Natalie Gerber for an intimate evening celebrating local craftsmanship. Experience the launch of custom bedding and a limited edition Natalie Gerber x Black Sheep pillow, handcrafted using natural materials and unique prints.
The evening features a fireside conversation between Black Sheep Mattress founder, Christian Schmidt and local Calgary textile artist Natalie Gerber on preserving traditional craft, supporting local artisans, and choosing handmade over mass-produced. Wine and cheese will be served, along with the opportunity to be the first to place a custom order.
